# Cover overspending

> What to do when an envelope goes below zero in Bow: cover it with money from another envelope, and how cash and credit card overspending differ.

An envelope is overspent when you spend more than it holds. It shows a negative amount on Budget. If a collapsed group has an overspent envelope, a mark appears next to the group's name: red for cash, orange when it's all on credit.

## Cover one envelope

**1. Open the overspent envelope**

**2. Tap the Overspent banner**

**3. Choose where the money comes from**

Pick one or more envelopes to take money from, and how much.

**4. Tap Cover**

## Cash and credit

> **Cash or debit: red**
>
> If it's still uncovered when the month ends, it comes out of next month's Ready to Assign.

> **Credit card: orange**
>
> If you don't cover it, it becomes card debt instead of taking money from other envelopes.

> [!TIP]
>
> Turn on **Snooze Targets When Covering** in **Settings › Budget** to snooze the target of any envelope a cover leaves short, for that month.

If an expense will leave its envelope overspent, Bow tells you before you add it. You can still add it and cover the envelope afterward.
