# Log a transaction

> Add spending, income, transfers and credit card payments in Bow by hand, with Siri, from a receipt or from a bank notification.

**1. Tap + at the bottom right**

**2. Type the amount**

Digits fill in from the right, so `1250` is 12.50.

**3. Choose the type**

Expense, Inflow, Transfer or Payment.

**4. Choose the payee**

For an inflow, choose the source. Bow fills in the account you used with them last time and the envelope you usually choose for them. One different choice doesn't change that envelope; two of your last three do.

**5. Check and add**

Check the envelope, account and date, then tap **Add** at the bottom.

If you pick a future date, the button says **Schedule**, and Bow adds it as a scheduled transaction.

If an expense will leave its envelope overspent, Bow tells you before you add it. You can still add it and [cover the envelope](https://bowbudget.com/docs/overspending.md) afterward.

## Types

| Type | What it's for |
| - | - |
| **Expense** | Money you spend, taken from an envelope. |
| **Inflow** | Money coming in. Most goes to Ready to Assign; a refund can go back to an envelope. |
| **Transfer** | Money between two of your accounts. Transfers between on-budget accounts don't count as spending. |
| **Payment** | Paying a credit card from another account. See [Credit cards](https://bowbudget.com/docs/credit-cards.md). |

## More ways to add

> **Split between envelopes**
>
> In the envelope list, tap **+** and choose **Split Between Envelopes**. Useful for a store run that's part groceries and part household.

> **Keep a receipt photo**
>
> Tap **Add Photo** to keep a receipt with the transaction.

> **Make it recurring**
>
> Turn on **Recurring** to make it a scheduled transaction, like a bill or paycheck. It can repeat forever, or end after a number of payments or on a date. See [End a schedule](https://bowbudget.com/docs/payment-plans.md#end-a-schedule).

> **Add a payment plan**
>
> Share a Klarna, Affirm or Afterpay screenshot and Bow schedules each payment. See [Payment plans](https://bowbudget.com/docs/payment-plans.md).

> **Fill In with Bow**
>
> On an iPhone with Apple Intelligence, scan a receipt, choose a photo, speak or describe the purchase, and Bow fills in the sheet for you to check. See [Apple Intelligence](https://bowbudget.com/docs/apple-intelligence.md).

> **Share from another app**
>
> Share a receipt photo, screenshot or PDF from another app and choose **Add to Bow**. It waits at the top of Spending under **Shared to Bow**, and Bow keeps the receipt with the transaction you add.

> **Ask Siri**
>
